Who we are

eXcellence in eLearning is a limited company, incorporated in Scotland in 2005. eX-eL is:

  • John Gordon 

    John has 35 years experience as an academic and consultant, with his main activity being the development and roll out of technology supported learning. John has focussed on the use of technology to enhance learning, and has explored the market opportunities enable by technology enhanced learning. He has managed many technology development projects in the field of new technologies and their applications.
    John has acted as a consultant internationally in the development and application of new technologies.  He has led major EU funded projects in the applications of new technology. He has chaired various committees of Scottish Vocational Education Council and has been involved in recent major changes to the Scottish Vocational Curriculum. John is a past member of the Board of Management of South Lanarkshire College, and was chair of the eLearning Alliance, and a member of the board f the eAssessment Association..
    John has significant experience in future-scaping using scenario planning and other techniques for clients such as Nokia, ITI Techmedia, and Scottish Enterprise amongst others.
    John’s commercial experience includes directorships of several Learning and IT companies.  

  • Dr Ruth Thomas, BSc (Hons), MSc PhD, Director of Teaching and Learning:
    Ruth is an eLearning specialist with over 30 years experience gained in higher and further education and in the private sector. She has managed computer-based learning in the engineering department at Cambridge University. For some years she was director of a spinout company based on her research work. Currently she works with the JeLSIM eLearning consultancy. Her interests includes:
    • Development of highly interactive online content;
    • Use of simulations and games in eLearning;
    • Use of simulations in assessment;
    • Assessment of higher order skills and authentic assessment;
    • Improving the quality of online education and training;
  • James Dalton BA (Hons), M.Sc. Director of Quality, Managing Director
    Jim was employed in the Scientific Civil Service, the commercial sector, and then 17 years in FE/HE as senior lecturer/Head of Department. Jim:
    • Possesses a certified teaching qualification as well as various Assessment and Verification Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) qualifications. 
    • Has experience as an SQA unit writer, reviser and moderator. 
    • Has fifteen years experience in eLearning as author, editor, and finally director.
